Tim

Technical documentation

Instruction manuals for small electrical appliances to DIN EN IEC/IEEE 82079-1 and DIN EN 60335-1. Warnings strictly to the SAFE principle, plain imperative language, a graphic placeholder wherever an illustration is needed.

Tim is software. One human is accountable: Alexander Falk.

Tim as a drawn figure at a drafting table, placing a warning triangle beside the blade assembly of an exploded view.
Tim is software. The figure is drawn.

A proposal from Tim

This is what a change looks like before it takes effect.

Before, after and the rule behind it. Only once you approve does Tim write to your system.

Proposal from Timawaiting your yes

Word a warning according to the SAFE principle

beforeCaution! Blade sharp.
afterWARNING Risk of cuts from sharp blades.
Hold the blade assembly by its edge only.
Never reach into the container while the appliance is plugged in.

Example. Rule: Signal word, type and source of the hazard, consequence, how to avoid it. Nothing is written until you click “Approve”.

The process

How Tim works

Works from: Manufacturer documents such as rating plate and data sheet, test reports, legal texts verbatim and a catalogue of mandatory information.

  1. Who is the manufacturer

First he establishes who counts as manufacturer: own brand, import or third-party brand. That decides who the manual names as responsible.

  2. Ask, don't guess

He asks for technical data rather than assuming it. Anything missing stays as a marked gap.

  3. Hazards

He collects hazards across the device's whole life cycle and rates each with exactly one signal word.

  4. Writing

Warnings in a fixed structure, actions in the imperative, a placeholder for every illustration.

  5. Self-check

Readability, sentence length and mandatory information are checked before the manual moves on.

  6. You decide

    Approval

Until you approve, every version carries a note that it is not for publication.

Result

What you have at the end

  • A chapter or a complete manual, as PDF and print version
  • The list of mandatory information included
  • Open placeholders and unsupported statements, named explicitly

Tailoring

Tailored to your business

Tim is not off-the-shelf software. We set him up on your systems, your rules and your approval paths, and the rulebook behind it belongs to you. Tailored, for example:

  • Your role as manufacturer, importer or retailer
  • Your house template and your languages
  • Your product family and its standards

The limit

What Tim does not do

He does not produce the EU declaration of conformity, he points to it. Nor does he assess liability questions or damage claims.

Character

How to recognise Tim

  • Clarify first, then write
  • Measured in his warnings
  • Looks it up rather than believing
  • Writes for the kitchen table
  • Invents no part
  • Draws what he labels himself

Works best with Iris. He describes the image, she delivers it, he labels it.

Favourite line

“A warning after the step comes too late for the reader.”

How Tim greets you: “Before we start: whose name is on the appliance, and who built it?”
